Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the speech styles and language use patterns within the Mountain Climbing Student Community (Mapala) at Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED). Data were collected from two transcripts of direct discussion recordings with active Mapala UNIMED members. A qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic approach was employed. The results reveal that the Mapala UNIMED community possesses a rich and complex linguistic ecology, encompassing: (1) a distinctive jargon and register system consisting of organizational and field jargon; (2) the use of the address form 'Bung' as an ideological linguistic construction representing egalitarianism and gender equality values; (3) a seniority-based language stratification system coexisting with equality norms; (4) code-switching and code-mixing phenomena involving three code layers (Indonesian, Medan/Batak dialect, and English); (5) the use of figurative language styles including metaphor, hyperbole, euphemism, and distinctive staccato narrative technique; (6) communication ethics as a core community value; and (7) critical discourse on environmental and socio-political issues. These findings demonstrate that language in the Mapala community functions not merely as a communication tool, but also as an identity marker, solidarity builder, and symbolic resistance mechanism.
